Having a little animal to keep your company is great for those who feel lonely or just enjoy some extra fun in their life. For some people, their pet is more like a friend, a family member than just a normal animal. However, finding a suitable pet is not an easy task.
Where do you think are the best places to get a pet?
There is a big pet shop near the Victoria Market that offers a wide selection of pets from puppies and kittens to more exotic breeds like reptiles: http://upmarketpets.com
Another shop called Pets Paradise in the Melbourne Central offers the experience of "puppies in the windows", where you can watch the pets interacting.
Unless you like to adopt bigger pets, I don't suggest RSCPA since training might be difficult. Plus pets with a rough past often have difficulties getting along.
Still, an even better option than getting a pet from shops is to buy them straight from breeders, where you can choose the breeds, observe their parents to see the personality, etc.
Please DO NOT buy a puppy from a pet shop where they are on display in the windows. I know they look cute but all those puppies come from puppy factories where they are kept inside in the dark in wire cages, and the mothers are just kept to breed more and more puppies. Some are in terrible conditions, just check out the RSPCA website to see evidence of these factories. It is terrible. The only way to buy a puppy is from a breeder where you see the puppy with its mother and can check out the conditions it has been reared in.
Why not adopt a pet, rather than purchase one from a pet-shop. So many beautiful animals have been abandoned and mistreated. By adopting one you're giving an animal a second chance to find a loving home where they'll hopefully be cherished forever.
Places where you can adopt a pet in Melbourne include the RSPCA, Lost Dog's Home, Melbourne Animal Rescue, Edgar's Mission Farm, the Australian Cavy Sanctuary (Melbourne sanctuary) and the Animal Rescue Society. Lots of other places exist too...check online for more info.
