I would say Om Vegetarian restaurant on Swanston st, melbourne CBD and lentil as anything in st kilda are great places to have tasty and filling meals with family and friends for $6-$8.
Let's Bap Korean and Japanese Cafeteria in Chadstone is excellent value. Its definitely a 'no-fills' eatery, but each meal will rarely cost much more than $10, which includes free hot tea that you serve yourself in good old fashioned metal canisters, miso soup and veggie side dishes. You can also ask for an additional serving of kimchi (traditional Korean side dish of seasoned vegetables) at no extra cost.

Lygon street has some beautiful Italian restaurants which are economical.
