Before I came to Melbourne, I had the impression that people go to the beach and have parties by the seaside in Christmas. This idea was brushed off by some of my friends as absurd. Honestly, if you are single and without family to stay with during Christmas then I suggest some parties with friends, or you can take advantage of this time to organise your personal tour around Melbourne. It is a busy time in the city and you will definitely find something to amuse yourself.
A fun way of spending Christmas in Melbourne is by launching into adventures of exploring and admiring Christmas decorations around Melbourne especially Myer Christmas Window, Crown's Christmas Fantastic and CIty of Melbourne's Christmas Festival. Further on the Christmas day, Federation Square usually hosts free Christmas celebrations where all are welcome.
Melbourne has so culturally diverse that it offers anyone the opportunity to enjoy its natural beauty. The best place, I think, would to take a cruise down the Yarra River and to take a little scenic drive through the Dandenongs.
We’re from Sydney, but we go to Melbourne, every 2nd Christmas, & spend the time with our 2 daughters & 2 grand-daughters down there. We weren’t able to see them last Christmas, so we had a lovely Christmas with our younger daughter, her partner, & his family!
